Thomas Markle, 82, was taken into federal custody on Friday in Lakeland, Florida, on charges related to the possession of child sexual abuse material. The arrest marks a formal legal action against the estranged father of Meghan Markle, who has long managed public perception of her family dynamics.
US Attorney Bill Essayli stated that Markle is charged with one count of possession of child pornography. He is scheduled to appear in court in Tampa on Friday for his initial hearing. Essayli described the allegations as extremely serious, noting that the government intends to prosecute the case to the fullest extent of federal law.
According to the Justice Department, the evidence includes sexually explicit photographs of Markle with prepubescent girls. Officials said these images were kept in two storage units located in the Los Angeles area, which Markle rented for nearly two decades.
FBI agents seized approximately 78 items from the storage facilities. The inventory includes slides, film negatives, and books containing suspected child sexual abuse material. The department indicated that agents also found similar images at Markle’s former home in the Philippines and at a separate storage unit in Mexico.
The potential financial and personal stakes of the case are high. If convicted, Markle faces a maximum prison term of 20 years. His son, Thomas Markle Jr., reportedly discovered the images while organizing boxes from their shared history in the Philippines. That discovery prompted the British tabloid The Sun to report on the situation last month.
Meghan Markle responded to the news last month, stating she was deeply distressed by the accusations. She confirmed that she had blocked contact between her father and her children due to previous troubling and disturbing allegations. The couple, who married in 2018 and left royal duties in 2020, returned to the United Kingdom in August to live with their two children.
Markle had been residing in Cebu, Philippines, until returning to the United States earlier this year. He was living in a retirement home in Lakeland when FBI agents took him into custody early Friday. The case now moves from public speculation to federal litigation, with the seized digital and physical media serving as the primary evidence.
