Greenwich girls volleyball defeated No. 2 Trumbull 3-1 on Friday night at Stamford High to win the FCIAC championship for the second consecutive year. The Cardinals, who finished the regular season with a 20-0 record, took the final two sets to close out the match.
Bailee Dayon, a junior libero for Greenwich, recorded 27 digs, 13 assists, and 15 service points. Her performance stabilized the defense as the game progressed.
"It’s so exciting and such an amazing feeling, and I am so proud of my whole team," Dayon said. "I think we set up a very great block the last two sets and it made it easier for me to read."
Trumbull’s Mckenzyi Bell led the offense with 17 kills. Greenwich coach Marianna Linnehan noted that Bell was difficult to stop when in the front row, but the team adjusted its blocking strategy in the final two sets.
Kayah Armstrong contributed 20 kills and two blocks for Greenwich. Heidi Zieme added 14 kills and 16 digs, while Victoria Sullivan recorded 25 assists and 15 digs. Beatriz Lisboa Da Cunha De Freitas provided 20 assists and nine digs.
Trumbull, which finished the regular season 19-2, led most of the third set. The Cardinals took their first lead of that set at 21-20 and held on to win 25-22. Trumbull coach Nicole Trommelen said her team ran out of steam in the final set after competing well in the first three.
Sammie Tommasino was named player of the game with 15 kills, 13 digs, two blocks, and 10 service points. Greenwich enters the Class LL tournament as the No. 1 seed, while Trumbull is the No. 3 seed. Both teams receive first-round byes and will play their next matches on Nov. 12.
