Sarah Michelle Gilley-Wroe will spend the rest of her life in prison without the chance of parole after a Texas jury convicted her of killing her infant daughter. The 24-year-old received the sentence for one count of capital murder of a child under the age of 10.
The victim died on May 11, 2022, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Medical records indicated the 5-week-old girl suffered from severe head trauma. Investigators noted that the infant had two fractures in the back of her skull, injuries that medical professionals attributed to blunt force impact.
Detectives examined Gilley-Wroe's mobile phone and discovered search queries that supported the prosecution's case. While in custody, she made statements that authorities described as incriminating. She told a cellmate that she had thrown the baby against a wall and continued hitting the child until the crying stopped.
Authorities established that Gilley-Wroe was the only adult alone with the child during the period when the fatal injuries occurred. The defense argued that the injuries could have been caused by the baby's father, her aunt, or a family dog. Gilley-Wroe maintained this position during the proceedings.
Medical experts provided a specific comparison for the severity of the impact. They stated that the force required to create the observed skull fractures was equivalent to the force generated by a fall from a two-story building.
