A state witness gave birth to a baby in a High Point courtroom on Monday morning. The event occurred at the Guilford County Courthouse, interrupting the normal flow of legal proceedings.

Court workers quickly gathered blankets and supplies for the new mother and infant, according to posts on Facebook. The baby was described as being in good health.

Jameson Attorney Georgina Dixon said in a Facebook post that she had seen many things during her years of practicing law. However, a lady having a baby in the courtroom was a first for her. Dixon noted that the attorney was seen outside a courtroom door, praying all turned out okay.

Privacy laws prohibited first responders from sharing details about the mother and baby. There are no reports of any other baby having been born in a Guilford County courthouse.

One such incident was documented nationwide in 2019. A 44-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy on a bench in the Wixom County Criminal Court in Brooklyn just before midnight.

The Monday birth stands as a rare occurrence in the local judicial system. The mother and child were assisted by court staff before the proceedings could continue.
