The Washington Regional Alcohol Program is distributing $15 Lyft credits to intercept drivers who have been drinking this weekend.

The initiative follows a long-standing pattern of intervention during high-risk holidays. Since 1991, the nonprofit has operated the SoberRide program on dates such as Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, and the winter holidays. Last Halloween, 4,056 people in the D.C. region utilized the service to reach home safely.

The program targets a specific demographic identified in federal data. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records indicate that 29.2% of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2024 involved a drunk driver. Kurt Erickson, WRAP’s president, noted that 54% of 21 to 34-year-olds killed in U.S. traffic crashes between 2019 and 2024 were involved in incidents with drunk drivers.

The credits are available to residents 21 and older within Lyft’s service area. This includes the City of Alexandria, parts of D.C., and surrounding jurisdictions in Virginia and Maryland. The service runs from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31.

Users must enter a specific code in the payment section of the Lyft app to receive the offer. The codes will be posted at soberride.com at 9 p.m. on both Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. WRAP has provided more than 100,000 safe rides since the program’s inception.

The organization is also concluding a separate drug prevention campaign at local schools. WRAP participated in Red Ribbon Week at Alexandria City Public Schools, a national initiative that ran from Oct. 23 to Oct. 31.
