UTSA advanced to the American Conference Tournament after a 1-0 victory over Florida Atlantic University on Tuesday night at Park West Athletics Complex. The win in the final regular-season match secured the Roadrunners a postseason berth, ending a season defined by a mix of resilience and narrow margins.
The team entered the contest with an 8-5-5 record and a 4-4-2 mark in conference play. A loss would have eliminated them from tournament contention. UTSA controlled the early possession, limiting the Owls to just two shots in the first half while managing the ball effectively.
Sophomore midfielder Olivia Christodoulides broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. She received a long pass from midfielder Sofia Peters, evaded the opposing defense, and fired the ball into the net. This marked Christodoulides' first collegiate goal. The player had been a walk-on after tearing her ACL during her senior year of high school, a period during which she had received no other collegiate offers.
Florida Atlantic responded with increased pressure in the second half, attempting 11 shots against the UTSA defense. Despite the volume of attacks, the Owls failed to find the back of the net. UTSA goalkeeper Kessler recorded four saves to preserve the clean sheet.
The performance gave Kessler her 20th career shutout and her 30th career victory. It was her final home game as a senior. "To come out here, not only win, but get the shutout as well. It's unimaginable," Kessler said. "The feeling is beyond words."
Christodoulides described her moment of scoring as a blur. "Honestly, I don't even remember what I felt like," she said. "I was just so happy to be able to help contribute to my team in a positive way."
Head coach Derek Pittman noted the high stakes of the match. "It was pretty much a win-or-go-home kind of scenario for us," Pittman said. "It speaks to the character of who our players are that they're never going to quit. They're never going to back down." The Roadrunners finished the match with 11 shots compared to the Owls' 13.
UTSA will travel to Lakewood Ranch, Florida, to face fourth-seeded Rice University on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. The fifth-seeded Roadrunners are defending the conference championship they won last season.
