North Texas basketball players dismantled Southwestern Christian on Monday night, winning 122-50 in their season opener. The victory serves as an immediate response to a recent exhibition loss that had raised questions about the team's readiness under head coach Daniyal Robinson. By securing a decisive win, the Mean Green moved their record to 1-0 and set the tone for the start of their conference schedule.
The game was a test of the program's defensive identity, which had been lacking in the prior week's exhibition against Northwestern State. Robinson noted that his players needed to show the toughness and defensive prowess that characterize the team. In response, the Mean Green recorded 16 steals and converted turnovers into 32 points. This defensive pressure allowed the offense to operate with freedom, resulting in a high-scoring first half where North Texas led 57-17.
Offensive versatility was evident as six players finished with double-digit point totals. Freshman forward Aeneas Alexander led the team with 22 points and nine rebounds. His performance was supported by Amar Amkou, who contributed 16 points and nine rebounds. Other contributors included Je'Shawn Stevenson with 15 points, Chavis with 17 points, and Franklin with 12 points. Robinson praised the group for attacking the basket and pushing the pace, a strategy that capitalized on the lack of a set defense from their opponent.
"It was tough," Stevenson said regarding the week between the exhibition and the opener. He added that the coaching staff holds players to a high standard of accountability. "We knew we were doing what we needed to in order to get better." Amkou echoed this sentiment, stating that the team learned from previous mistakes and improved their play.
The quick start to the game helped North Texas establish control early. Stevenson hit a three-point shot just 16 seconds into the contest, signaling the team's intent. The Mean Green maintained their lead throughout the second half, using the large margin to provide playing time to bench players. Robinson emphasized that the team's goal was to play their style of basketball regardless of the score, focusing on intensity rather than just the final number.
North Texas now turns its attention to McNeese, which is scheduled to play on Thursday. The Cowboys recently defeated American Conference rival UAB in a neutral site game, indicating they will be a challenging opponent for the Mean Green. Stevenson acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming matchup, noting that McNeese was added to the schedule specifically to test the team's capabilities.
Robinson described the preseason inconsistencies as a learning opportunity. He stated that the team's message was to show up in a specific way whenever playing at the Super Pit, regardless of the opponent. The 122-50 victory provides a factual baseline for the team's current form as they enter the next phase of their season.
