Elena Rybakina has locked in the year-end world number one ranking following a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yulia Putintseva on Thursday. The win came in the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. This result occurred more than a week before the season-ending WTA Finals.
The 27-year-old Kazakh needed only one additional win to prevent Aryna Sabalenka from overtaking her for the top spot. Sabalenka, currently world number two, could no longer surpass Rybakina's points total. This mathematical certainty allows Rybakina to enter the final tournament as the undisputed top-ranked player.
Rybakina arrived in Tokyo after winning the Ningbo Open last week. That title was her fourth of the season and her first as the number one player. She received a bye into the last 16 at the Ariake Coliseum. Her current season includes wins at the Australian Open and the US Open, bringing her career Grand Slam total to three.
Her path to this ranking was not without interruption. Following her US Open triumph, she lost her opening match in Beijing. She also missed the Wuhan Open due to a leg injury. She recovered to defend her title in Ningbo, setting the stage for this Tokyo campaign.
Next, Rybakina will face Leylah Fernandez in a rematch of their recent final. Fernandez advanced by defeating Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6(8). Rybakina is targeting a 16th career title before traveling to Indian Wells, California.
The WTA Finals will feature the season's top eight players from November 8 to 15. Rybakina's performance in Tokyo directly influences her momentum heading into that elite group stage.
