Prime Video expanded the ensemble cast for the second season of Young Sherlock on Monday. The streaming service announced that Sophie Skelton, Indira Varma, Olivia Williams, and Aidan Gillen will appear in key recurring roles. These additions join returning stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays the young Sherlock Holmes, and Dónal Finn as James Moriarty.
The series is based on Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels. Amazon MGM Studios renewed the drama earlier this year after the first season drew strong viewership and positive audience response. The first season followed the impulsive 19-year-old Holmes as he investigated a murder at Oxford. In that storyline, he forged an unlikely bond with Moriarty while uncovering a larger conspiracy.
Guy Ritchie produced the drama and directed the opening episodes of the first season. He is scheduled to return to direct the premiere of the second season. Creator and showrunner Matthew Parkhill will continue to oversee the series. Other returning cast members expected for the new season include Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Max Irons, Natascha McElhone, and Colin Firth.
Prime Video has not yet revealed the specific characters the newly announced actors will portray. The series is set during Holmes’ late teenage years, reimagining the detective before he becomes the legendary investigator of Baker Street. Producers described the story as a multi-season origin tale exploring how the future rivals evolve into the figures familiar to readers of Arthur Conan Doyle’s work.
Executives have praised the creative team’s fresh take on the character and the evolving relationship between Sherlock and Moriarty. Producers indicated that future episodes will continue expanding the mythology introduced in the first season. A premiere date for the second season has not yet been announced.
