The Georgia High School Association will not issue a final ruling on an ineligible player claim against Newton High School until after the state playoffs end. Executive Director Tim Scott confirmed this timeline on Thursday, noting that the bylaws require a full investigation before any penalty is assessed.
Newton enters the postseason as the third-ranked team in Class 7A. The squad holds a 9-0 record, which marks the best start in the program's history. A claim from a local reporter triggered the current review process.
If the GHSA determines a player was not eligible to take the field, Newton must forfeit every game in which that specific individual participated. The team is currently under investigation regarding one player only.
Scott described the process as a common occurrence in high school sports. He explained that allegations often stem from minor issues or simple mistakes. In most cases, the committee finds that the player was eligible or the error was correctable. He stated that allegations do not usually lead to penalties.
Historical data shows the consequences can be severe when errors are confirmed. Over the last decade, the GHSA has forced five football teams to forfeit at least six games each. These forfeitures included playoff wins and were decided after the regular season had concluded.
In 2017, the association required the 2001 and 2002 seasons to be revisited due to ineligible players. In 2019, the GHSA ruled that the 2020 and 2021 seasons were affected by similar issues. These cases involved teams from different regions across the state.
The investigation is ongoing while Newton prepares for the next round of competition. The association has stated that the current football season remains active under the existing rules until the final decision is made.
