JetBlue Airways will charge economy passengers $50 for the first checked bag on most domestic and international flights within the Americas starting November 3. This represents an 11 dollar increase from the previous rate of $39 and marks the airline's second major price hike this year.

The new pricing structure varies by timing and season. During peak travel periods such as Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the base fee rises to $55 if purchased at least 24 hours before departure. If passengers wait until the final 24 hours, the cost increases to $70 for peak periods and $60 for off-peak times.

The airline attributed the change to rising operational expenses, specifically jet fuel costs. In an emailed statement, JetBlue explained that the adjustment allows it to maintain competitive base fares while offering passengers the option to pay for checked luggage only when necessary. The increase in the second checked bag fee is equally steep, now starting at $70 off-peak and $75 peak, with airport counter payments reaching as high as $85.

Fuel prices have surged following the conflict with Iran, which began in late February with U.S. and Israeli strikes. The war has left the Strait of Hormuz largely restricted, disrupting global oil supplies. JetBlue data shows the average fuel price hit $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% increase from the same period last year. The company projects that figure will climb to $4.64 per gallon in the fourth quarter, an 85% year-over-year rise.

This is the second time the carrier has raised baggage fees in 2026. The initial hike occurred in March after the conflict started, a move that prompted similar fee increases from Delta, United, American, and Southwest. JetBlue executives noted during the third-quarter earnings call last week that customer demand remains strong despite the higher fares and fuel costs.

The airline based its fees in New York at John F. Kennedy International Airport. While most travelers will face higher costs, the company noted that certain groups retain free checked bag privileges. This includes eligible co-branded credit card holders and members of the airline's loyalty program.
