Montgomery County police arrested a Dallas man on Wednesday after he allegedly struck an officer in the head with a privately made gun in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The incident began just before 11 p.m. on Monday when officers spotted a stolen Chevrolet Corvette traveling south on New Hampshire Avenue. They followed the vehicle until it parked in the driveway of a home on the 900 block of Hollywood Avenue. Two people exited the car and entered the residence.

Isaiah Armstrong-Smith, 23, of Dallas, walked out of the house as a plainclothes officer approached the vehicle, according to police. He was holding a privately manufactured firearm. Smith swung the gun and hit the officer in the head before running away.

Officers caught Smith on the 900 block of Winhall Way with help from a K-9 unit and a helicopter. He had thrown the weapon near the first scene, but detectives located it in the 1000 block of Hollywood Avenue. A 22-year-old Silver Spring resident arrested at the initial location was released pending further investigation.

The Corvette was reported stolen from Anne Arundel County on Oct. 1. Smith is charged with first-degree assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, and several firearms offenses. He is currently being held without bond.
