A Fulbright Scholar from Normandy, France, is now teaching French at Guilford Technical Community College. Alan Leroux began his one-year commitment as a foreign language teaching assistant this month. He joined the faculty specifically to assist GTCC students in learning the language.
The college serves a large and diverse student population. GTCC reports that it handles 30,000 students annually. Of those students, 66% are enrolled on a part-time basis. The institution offers more than 70 degrees and 100 short-term training programs. Students can also choose from 63 different clubs and sports programs.
Leroux’s arrival marks a new resource for the language department. As a Fulbright Scholar, he brings direct cultural and linguistic experience from his home region of Normandy. His role is strictly defined by his one-year grant period. During this time, he will conduct classes designed to improve student proficiency in French.
Guilford Technical Community College has long promoted access to education through low costs and financial aid. The school lists quality, affordability, and support as its primary pillars. The addition of a visiting scholar from Europe fits within that framework of providing varied educational opportunities. Students interested in French now have a dedicated expert from the language’s native country available on campus.
The Fulbright program facilitates this exchange by placing scholars in educational settings. Leroux’s presence allows students to engage with a native speaker in a structured academic environment. The college encourages students to explore its website for more details on programs and resources. This new teaching arrangement adds a specialized component to the standard curriculum offerings at GTCC.
