Holiday shoppers in Cincinnati can save money by buying small accessories at dollar stores. A price comparison conducted this week shows that Dollar Tree and Dollar General charge less for common seasonal items than Hallmark, Walmart, Target, and Wayfair. The survey focused on gift wrap, decorations, and baking supplies.
At Dollar Tree, holiday gift bags, tissue paper, and packs of gift tags cost $1.50 each. Hallmark sold similar gift bags for $3.99. Dollar Tree listed ornaments at $1.50. Reindeer and countdown decorations were priced at $5. Stockings featuring Minions and Spider-Man cost $1.50. Candy for stocking stuffers started at $1.25, and Skittles candy canes were $3. Oven mitts were $1.50, and disposable aluminum pans were $1.75.
Dollar General offered different savings on paper goods. Fifty square feet of wrapping paper cost $3 at Dollar General. Hallmark charged $5.99 for 30 square feet. A pack of 28 Christmas cards was $3 at Dollar General. The store also sold a 30-pack of shatterproof ornaments for $5. Walmart listed a similar 30-pack for $18. Gift boxes at Dollar General started at $1. Target sold a single gift box for $8.
The reporter noted that these small costs add up quickly during the holiday season. Items like tissue paper, tags, and ornaments often come on top of the cost of the gifts themselves. Choosing the cheaper option for these extras can free up budget for larger purchases.
The price check was part of a consumer segment reported by John Matarese and Taylor Nimmo. The segment aired on WCPO-TV and was later converted for digital platforms. The editorial team verified the reporting for accuracy.
The survey did not cover every item in the stores. Prices may vary by location. The comparison focused on specific products available at the time of the visit in Cincinnati.
Shoppers can use the data to plan their holiday spending. The findings suggest that dollar stores remain a competitive option for seasonal basics. The report does not predict future price changes or inventory availability.
