Residents of Rapid City face new developments in three major local cases as of Wednesday. The news affects families involved in recent violent incidents and thousands of patients relying on specific hospital networks. Officials finalized sentencing for a deadly 2025 assault, identified the suspect in a recent fatal shooting, and began formal negotiations on a disputed health insurance contract.

Two men received prison terms for their roles in the death of 24-year-old Michael Ladeaux. Joshua Thunder Hawk, 25, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting first-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors designated Thunder Hawk as the primary aggressor in the beating. He received a 40-year prison sentence. In a related case, Dustin Yatsayte, 25, also pleaded guilty to the same charge. He admitted to kicking Ladeaux during the assault. Yatsayte received a 15-year prison sentence.

Police identified the victim and suspect in a fatal shooting from Tuesday. The victim is Jason Brave, 19, who was shot in the 1500 block of Kellog Place on October 27. Rapid City police determined that Antwon Longvisitor, 19, fired the fatal shot. This determination came after additional witness interviews and physical evidence recovery. Longvisitor is from Rapid City.

The driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal rollover crash on Skyline Drive has been arrested. Maricel Barrientos, 19, was taken into custody on October 23. One occupant of the vehicle died from injuries sustained in the crash. Barrientos faces one count of Vehicular Homicide and one count of Vehicular Battery. The arrest marks the conclusion of the initial investigation phase for this incident.

Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield disputed claims made by Sanford Health on Wednesday. Sanford Health announced on Tuesday that it plans to leave the Wellmark network starting July 1, 2027. Sanford cited Wellmark's refusal to compromise on demands for exclusive control of patient care decisions. Wellmark stated in a statement that it worked in good faith to renew the longstanding contract. The insurer believes the disagreement centers on payment amounts rather than care control.

Negotiations between the two entities will continue over the next eight months. The contract dispute involves a longstanding partnership that affects local healthcare access. Sanford Health is a major provider in the region. Wellmark serves a large portion of the local population. The outcome of these talks will determine whether Sanford remains in the network or exits as planned.

These local updates follow a series of high-profile legal and administrative decisions in the area. The sentencing of Thunder Hawk and Yatsayte concludes the criminal phase of the Ladeaux case. The identification of Longvisitor provides closure for the family of Jason Brave. The Barrientos arrest addresses the fatal Skyline Drive crash. The Wellmark and Sanford Health negotiations set the stage for future healthcare access decisions in the region.

Officials released the information during regular business hours on Wednesday. The sentencing hearings took place earlier in the week. The shooting identification came from the Rapid City police department. The health contract dispute was announced publicly by both organizations. No further legal proceedings are scheduled for these specific cases at this time.
