East Lansing police are investigating four unrelated incidents that unfolded overnight on Halloween near Michigan State University's campus, including two shootings and two crashes in which pedestrians were struck. Multiple people were injured.
Police Chief Jennifer Brown outlined the cases at a press conference on Sunday, describing where each investigation stands.
The first pedestrian crash happened on Abbot Road near Library Lane. The driver stayed at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital and was listed overnight in critical condition. After undergoing surgery on Sunday, the victim is now in stable condition.
The first shooting took place after midnight near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Three people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital. Brown said two of them are in stable condition, while the condition of the third is not known.
The second pedestrian crash occurred near Grand River Avenue and Gunson Street and also involved a suspected drunk driver. Officers arrested the driver on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and a firearm was recovered from the vehicle. That pedestrian was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.
The second shooting happened early Sunday morning near Stoddard Street and Frye Avenue. Two people with gunshot wounds were taken to a nearby hospital, and Brown said both are in stable condition. Police recovered multiple guns at the scene, but have not yet determined whether they are the weapons used in the shooting. Several people were taken into custody in connection with that case.
Brown acknowledged how alarming the night was for those nearby. "We are aware that this situation was extremely frightening for bystanders, including the Michigan State University students, as well as their families," she said. She added that there is no known threat to the community at this time.
She also pointed to the department's working relationship with the university. "Our relationship with the university is strong, and we will continue to work together," Brown said. She noted that on one of the city's busiest nights, East Lansing officers provided life-saving aid to gunshot victims, secured multiple crime scenes and removed impaired drivers from the streets.
According to Brown, officers were still responding to one incident when the next one began. She thanked mutual aid partners for their help: Michigan State Police, the Meridian Township Police Department, the Lansing Police Department, the Ingham County Sheriff's Office, and the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety.
