The University of Louisville men’s basketball team begins its 2026-27 campaign with an 11th place ranking in the AP Poll. Head coach Pat Kelsey enters his third season leading the Cardinals, who have undergone a major roster reconstruction during the offseason.

The roster features only one returning player from the previous season. Adrian Wooley is the sole holdover, as leading scorers Mikel Brown Jr. and Ryan Conwell moved to the NBA. London Johnson was reportedly dismissed from the team in August. The Cardinals have filled the vacancies with transfers and reclassified recruits.

Backcourt additions include Jackson Shelstead from Oregon, Seth Trimble from North Carolina, and LJ Wells. Issac Ellis, a former 2027 commit from Overtime Elite, reclassified to play immediately. On the wing, the team signed Karter Knox, De’Shayne Montgomery, Alvaro Folgueiras, and Boyuan Zhang. The center position is anchored by Flory Bidunga, Obinna Ekezie Jr., and Gabe Dynes, a 7-foot-5 player from Kentucky who will likely miss the season due to injury.

Trimble and Wells joined the program under a federal court ruling that granted a fifth year of eligibility to players from the class of 2022 who had previously exhausted their eligibility. Their status fluctuated throughout the summer as rulings changed and a previous restraining order was shut down. A recent injunction restored their eligibility just before the season start, though the NCAA has appealed that decision and the lawsuit remains ongoing.

The Cardinals won all three of their exhibition games against Bahamas Raw Talent, No. 17 Kansas, and Mercyhurst. The regular season opens on Nov. 2 against Chattanooga at the KFC YUM! Center. Non-conference matchups include trips to Memphis on Nov. 15 and Rupp Arena to face No. 23 Kentucky on Dec. 12.

Home games include a contest against No. 19 Texas Tech in the Player’s Era Classic starting Nov. 24 and a meeting with No. 7 Texas in the ACC-SEC Challenge on Dec. 1. The team also faces Michigan at a neutral site on Dec. 5.

The coaching staff has shifted the team’s focus from offense to defense during the offseason. The current roster is described as tougher and bigger than last year’s group, which struggled with consistency. The team faces a challenge regarding shot creation and three-point shooting as it prepares to compete in the ACC.
