Binance Reports $6.3 Billion Security Incident Involving Compromised Laptop
The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange suspended deposits and withdrawals after a breach that may have allowed unauthorized withdrawals, prompting stablecoin issuers to freeze billions in assets.

Binance stated on Thursday that an estimated $6.3 billion in assets are affected by a potential security issue, a figure that places the incident among the largest financial breaches in the history of cryptocurrency exchanges. The company identified the likely cause as a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which allowed an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Despite the scale of the reported loss, Binance maintains that user funds remain secure.
To contain the damage, the exchange worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in assets on-chain. Stablecoin providers also moved quickly to lock up related funds. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino announced on X that the company froze more than $1.5 billion in currency linked to the incident. Jeremy Allaire, co-founder and CEO of Circle, stated that his company froze over $800 million in currency in coordination with law enforcement. These actions aim to prevent the stolen assets from moving further across digital ledgers.
Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, addressed the situation on social media. Although he stepped down as CEO in 2023, he acknowledged the severity of the event. Zhao said, "User funds are safe!" while adding that the incident "does look like a hack on Binance." As a shareholder, he expressed the expectation that all user funds will be fully covered. Zhao, who pleaded guilty to a felony in 2023 for failing to prevent money laundering on the platform, was pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2025 and released from prison last year.
Binance suspended all deposits and withdrawals on Thursday to conduct security checks and freeze funds. A company spokesperson said in a statement that security teams are reviewing all relevant information with urgency. The company noted it has found no evidence of a wallet private key leak, suggesting the breach was operational rather than a failure of primary encryption. Teams are working with law enforcement, issuers, and blockchain intelligence firms to trace and freeze additional assets. The exchange plans to share more technical details once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified.
The security incident triggered immediate market reactions. The price of bitcoin fell 3.2% on Thursday evening, dropping below the $79,000 mark. Traders and investors monitored the exchange's communications closely as the company coordinated with various partners to mitigate the financial impact. The temporary halt to trading flows added to the uncertainty surrounding the stability of the platform during the investigation period.
The case underscores the operational risks faced by major digital asset platforms. Zhao was the first person sentenced to prison time for violating the Bank Secrecy Act, a law requiring U.S. financial institutions to monitor transactions and report suspicious activity. Prosecutors previously stated that no one had violated those regulations to the extent Zhao did. Zhao and Binance have been key supporters of several crypto enterprises associated with the Trump family. The current incident adds a new layer of scrutiny to the company's security protocols and its relationship with regulators and partners.
