Apple has begun taking preorders for its eighth-generation iPad Mini, a device that paradoxically offers its largest screen yet while shedding weight compared to the 2024 model. The release marks the first time the company's miniature tablet line features OLED technology, a display upgrade that accompanies a thinner physical design.
The new hardware runs on the A20 Pro chip, which Apple says will deliver faster performance and support specific Siri AI capabilities, including voice customization. The tablet also debuts an Acoustic Display system that uses the screen and frame to produce louder sound with deeper bass. Buyers can select from black or a creamy white shade.
Connectivity has also seen substantial upgrades. The device includes the N1 wireless chip, adding support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Cellular models feature the C2 modem, which promises cellular speeds up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation. The front-facing camera, now positioned on the long edge, is rated at 12 megapixels to accommodate landscape video calls.
Pricing for the entry-level Wi-Fi model with 128GB of storage starts at $699. Upgrading to 256GB adds $100, while the 512GB version costs $999. The 512GB model includes a six-core CPU, whereas lower storage tiers utilize a five-core processor. Cellular versions start at $849 for the 128GB configuration, with 256GB and 512GB options priced at $949 and $1,149, respectively.
Apple offers an optional nano-texture display for the 256GB and 512GB models to reduce glare. This feature raises the starting price to $899 for the 256GB Wi-Fi unit and $1,099 for the 512GB Wi-Fi unit. Adding LTE connectivity to these higher-tier models pushes the cost to $1,049 and $1,249, respectively.
Preorders are currently live at Amazon, Walmart, Target, B&H Photo, and Apple. Best Buy is also accepting orders and including a $50 e-gift card with each purchase. The device is scheduled to arrive on store shelves on November 6.
The launch occurred alongside the announcement of several new MacBook Pro models. Apple has not yet released the tablet for testing, with first impressions planned for an upcoming event.
