The stakes in Montgomery rise this week as two former rivals prepare to battle for the statehouse.
Current Governor Kay Ivey, who has served in office since 2017, is term-limited and cannot seek re-election. The race pits Democratic candidate Doug Jones against Republican candidate Tommy Tuberville. Both men previously ran against each other in the 2020 U.S. Senate race. Tuberville defeated Jones by roughly 20 points in that contest to secure a seat in the Senate. He has held that position since 2021. Jones served as a U.S. Senator from 2018 to 2021.
The Democratic primary featured a field of five challengers. Jones defeated Will Boyd, Jamel Brown, Yolanda Flowers, Chad 'Chig' Martin, and Nathan Mathis to claim the nomination. The Republican primary was closer. Tuberville edged out Ken McFeeters and Will Santivasci to become the party's standard-bearer.
Campaign preparations show different levels of engagement with local media. Jones' interview is scheduled for upload on Wednesday evening. Tuberville's team declined to arrange a new interview after multiple attempts over the past month. His staff directed reporters to a previously released document titled 'Back to Basics: The Golden Age Playbook' to outline his policy priorities.
Voters in Alabama will cast ballots for governor on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Central Time. The deadline for voter registration passed on Monday, Oct. 19.
