The financial line for a comfortable life in North Carolina has shifted downward this year.
SmartAsset, in a report distributed by Stacker on November 1, 2026, determined that a single adult in North Carolina now requires a pre-tax annual income of $93,475 to live comfortably. This figure represents a 0.3% decrease from the 2025 benchmark. The analysis covers all 50 states and defines a comfortable lifestyle as one where 50% of income covers necessities, 30% funds discretionary spending, and 20% goes toward savings for retirement and emergencies.
The study builds on data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator, which was last updated in February 2026. MIT provides the base costs for housing, food, and other essential expenses for a single adult or a family of four. SmartAsset then adjusted these figures using the 50/30/20 budgeting rule to estimate the total income required for a buffer against financial stress. The resulting numbers indicate that a six-figure salary is no longer a guarantee of ease in many parts of the country. In nearly half of the states, a single adult must earn more than $100,000 to meet the threshold.
North Carolina is one of only six states where the income required to live comfortably has declined since 2025. The other five states with lower 2026 thresholds are Tennessee, Maryland, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. In Tennessee, the required income for a single adult fell by 1.7%, the largest drop in the nation. Montana posted the largest increase, with the threshold rising 8.6% to $100,797. New York followed with an 8.4% increase, pushing the required income to $124,342.
For families, the financial pressure is even heavier. In 40 states, a household with two working adults and two children needs at least $200,000 a year to live comfortably. Massachusetts tops the list for family expense, requiring $329,555. Mississippi is the most affordable state for such a family, with a threshold of $187,533. For single adults, West Virginia is the least expensive state, where $81,245 is sufficient. Hawaii is the most expensive for single residents, requiring $129,002.
The report notes that source data providers are not affiliated with the study. The findings are based on pre-tax income figures. In North Carolina, the 2026 threshold of $93,475 places the state in the bottom half of the country for cost of living for single adults. This is lower than the national trend of rising costs, which affected 44 of the 50 states. The data reflects current housing, grocery, and transportation prices as of the February 2026 update.
The analysis does not account for local variations within states, such as the difference between a major metro area and a rural county. It provides a statewide average based on MIT's aggregated data. The 50/30/20 rule remains the standard framework for this calculation, ensuring that the savings portion is included in the definition of comfort. For North Carolina residents, the slight dip in the required income offers a small reprieve from the rising costs seen in neighboring states like Virginia, where the threshold rose 0.3% to $106,995.
The full report breaks down the income requirements for every state. It lists the specific year-over-year changes for each. These figures serve as a benchmark for workers evaluating their current salaries against the cost of living. The data suggests that financial planning must now account for higher baseline costs in most regions, even as some southern states see slight corrections.
