Lake Lure has allocated $1,336,595.51 in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds to repair storm damage. The town will direct $753,823.35 toward the Boys Camp Road Bridge and $582,772.16 toward restoring its dam gates. These figures are part of a larger $11 million package for Helene recovery projects in North Carolina.
Mayor Carol Pritchett stated that Hurricane Helene completely demolished the Boys Camp Road Bridge. She noted that more than 200 residents were cut off from the area during the storm. Pritchett said the bridge is expected to reopen within a week.
The dam gates allow the town to manage water levels in the lake. Pritchett explained that this function is necessary not only during hurricanes but at all times to control water inflow and outflow. She described the funding as a way to maintain that essential control.
The town still faces repair needs for its wastewater treatment plant, sewer system, dam, and town hall. Pritchett said the municipality relies heavily on federal assistance for these projects. She argued that the need for FEMA support remains constant despite calls to reduce its role.
Local resident Becky Melton said the area has waited a long time for this assistance. Tourist Dennis Misell observed that while recovery is difficult, many people have contributed to the effort. He stated the current condition looks better than what visitors anticipated upon arrival.
