Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier recalled a critical rescue during the film's production at a Los Angeles event on Friday, the day before the 10th anniversary of the movie's release.
Saulnier stated that production was nearing a shutdown because the lead role of Darcy Banker remained unfilled. The crew had already begun building sets and faced a tight deadline. He described the situation as a point of no return. The film was close to being dismantled.
Patrick Stewart, known for his role in Star Trek, expressed interest in the project unexpectedly. Saulnier noted that the actor had every reason to decline. Within one week of the initial contact, Saulnier was on the phone with Stewart. The actor agreed to join the cast. This decision immediately greenlit the production.
Saulnier described Stewart as a kind leader who aligned with the film's aesthetic. He shared an anecdote where Stewart requested permission to say a specific word in a scene. The actor wanted to say the word during a camera movement. Saulnier granted the request on the spot. This exchange confirmed to the director that Stewart understood the film's intentions.
The announcement of Stewart's death came on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home. His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, cited a brief journey with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. Stewart was 86 years old. The news prompted tributes from numerous colleagues.
Actors who have paid homage to Stewart include Ian McKellen, Kevin Feige, William Shatner, Seth MacFarlane, Hugh Jackman, Minnie Driver, Rebecca Romijn, Halle Berry, and James Marsden. Saulnier joined this group of professionals in acknowledging the impact of Stewart's career and his contribution to Green Room.
