Eva Geller, a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor from Hungary, died in a Sydney hospital on Friday, nearly one year after being wounded in the Bondi Beach terror attack. Authorities confirmed the death, marking a final loss for the Jewish community grieving the deadliest mass shooting in Australia in decades.

Geller was among dozens of people injured when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd celebrating a Jewish holiday at the beach on December 14, 2025. The attack resulted in 15 fatalities. Police later identified the alleged gunmen as Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram, who were inspired by the Islamic State. Sajid Akram was shot dead at the scene, while Naveed Akram, who survived, is facing charges including 15 counts of murder and a terror offense.

According to public broadcaster ABC, Geller spent the year following the attack in and out of hospitals. Rabbi Aron Moss told ABC that she showed incredible strength despite being told by doctors that she would never walk again. "She was told after being shot that she will never walk again by the doctors," Moss said. "But through sheer determination, she got back up, and she did walk again." He noted that she reached her 90th birthday before her final hospitalization at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

"She just never really recovered, and it was a couple of weeks ago she ended up in the Prince of Wales [hospital] and that was the end," Moss added. New South Wales police stated they were aware of the death and are currently awaiting further advice from the office of the coroner.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed sadness over the news, noting that the devastation of the attack continues to cause pain for families almost a year later. "We are wrapping our arms around Eva's family, friends and the Jewish community at this very sad time," the Prime Minister said. His remarks acknowledged the ongoing impact of the incident on the local community.

In the wake of the shooting, a government-backed inquiry into antisemitism was established. That inquiry is scheduled to hand down its findings on December 18. Geller's funeral is planned for next week, according to ABC.
