Hawks rookie guard Kingston Flemings will sit out Monday's game against the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to serve a one-game suspension. The NBA announced the penalty on Sunday following a review of a recent incident.
The suspension stems from an event during the final four minutes of Atlanta's 122-99 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday, October 31. With 3:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, officials stopped play after a dispute broke out on the court. Flemings and Pelicans guard Bryce McGowens appeared to exchange words before play resumed.
Replays showed that Flemings elbowed McGowens in the face while gathering for a layup that McGowens had just blocked. The two players also bumped shoulders while running back on defense. New Orleans coach Willie Green stated that the incident was bigger than initially thought and that McGowens had to leave the game. Green added that Flemings was the first person he spoke to after the contest.
League officials determined that Flemings had made a good play and that the game would have proceeded without the stoppage. The Hawks and Pelicans both returned to the road on Tuesday, meeting in the middle of a three-game stretch. The Hawks will resume play against the Pacers on Monday.
