The Atlanta Hawks escaped a three game losing streak on Thursday night. They defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 114 to 111 at State Farm Arena. The win stops a slide that saw the team drop its last three contests over the previous week.
Onyeka Okongwu led all scorers with 29 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Okongwu made four three point shots during the game. Nickeil Alexander Walker added 25 points for Atlanta. Aaron Wiggins provided 20 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench.
The Cavaliers threatened to overturn the deficit in the closing minutes. They cut a ten point Hawks lead with a twelve to four run. The score stood at 112 to 111 with 20.6 seconds remaining. Donovan Mitchell of the Hawks had 22 points and 42 assists in the contest.
Mitchell received a rebound after a Cavaliers miss. He attempted a corner three point shot to force overtime. The ball fell short of the rim. Lu Dort deflected the subsequent rebound to secure the victory for the home team.
Alexander Walker hit a contested corner three point shot in the second quarter. That play extended Atlanta's lead to 102 to 98. The Hawks maintained control of the game following that sequence. They did not allow the Cavaliers to close the gap significantly after that moment.
The Hawks face the New Orleans Pelicans next. That game is scheduled for Thursday night. The team looks to build on their defensive performance against Cleveland.
