Former NBA point guard Jason Williams said this week that LeBron James should remain stationary during the national anthem. Williams, who played 12 seasons for the Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Miami Heat, and Orlando Magic, made the remarks on the most recent episode of Barstool Sports' 'Hoopin' N Hollerin' podcast while speaking with co-host Adam Ferrone.
"I think motherf, ers should just stand the f, still during the national anthem. That's just my opinion," Williams said. He added that he does not personally care what James is doing but repeated his view that players are required to stand still. Williams stated that when he played, rules required players to be dressed the same and stand in place, though he acknowledged those rules might have changed.
James, a Philadelphia 76ers star, has drawn attention this season for swaying and appearing to practice his golf swing during the anthem. The activity has drawn comment from President Donald Trump and NBA legend and 'Inside the NBA' co-host Charles Barkley.
The NBA has not issued any fines to James for his movements during the anthem. Williams speculated that James could have been fined for dressing differently from other players, saying, "You're supposed to be standing still."
