Celtic secured their first win in the Europa League this season by defeating Besiktas 3-2 on Friday night. The result ended a difficult stretch for the club and provided a much-needed result for manager Martin O'Neill.
The first half drew sharp criticism from supporters who felt the starting lineup lacked direction. Fan Patrick noted that team selection and tactics left the side "all over the place." William added that the chosen starting lineup made it difficult to win without stronger players entering later.
The match shifted dramatically in the second half. Neil credited the substitutes for making the difference, specifically praising Callum Osmand and Camilo Duran for their performances. He described Mika Baur as a player with "heart of a lion" despite his small stature. The late goals secured the narrow 3-2 victory.
Supporters see this win as a potential turning point. Neil expressed delight for O'Neill, who needed a positive result. Patrick emphasized the need to carry this momentum into Sunday's match against Killie. However, Brian cautioned that it was not a 90-minute performance and urged the team to play their best eleven from the start to maintain faster pace and forward passing.
The win also sparked debate about squad composition. Jimmy argued that top European teams rely on youth, comparing Osmand's goal-scoring ability to Jimmy Greaves. He criticized the reliance on "over-25 misfits" in the squad, suggesting these signings block youth development. Mark agreed that while the team has talent, it is held back by weaker squad members and coaching choices.
