Alexander Johnston, a Class of 2027 student from Bernardsville, New Jersey, just finished an internship at TP ICAP in New York City. He worked as a global broking intern at the wholesale financial markets brokerage.
Johnston’s daily tasks included attending team and client meetings, working on business projects, and participating in internal workshops. He also received close mentorship from senior leadership. The role culminated in final capstone presentations.
During the internship, Johnston received the “Poise Under Pressure” award. The award recognized his ability to stay focused and effective in a fast-paced environment. He used the experience to apply skills he developed at High Point University.
Johnston credits HPU’s presentation-heavy classes and the Sales Club for improving his speaking skills. In business and sales courses, he presented constantly. This practice helped him organize ideas, speak with confidence, and adapt to questions in real time. The Sales Club provided additional opportunities to pitch and communicate persuasively to peers and professionals.
He identified Ginger Moore, professor of the practice of marketing and sales, and Larry Quinn, professor of the practice of sales, as his most impactful mentors. He noted that they have a deep love for their students and want to see them thrive in the real world. Johnston also used the Office of Career & Professional Development to refine his LinkedIn profile and resume.
The interview process for the internship included a dining component. Johnston attended a dinner at Wolfgang’s. He also recalled an employer dinner at 1924 PRIME, which helped him understand proper table etiquette. He stated that these experiences prepared him for the professional demands of the job.
Johnston said HPU taught him coachability and leadership. He learned to welcome direct, honest feedback and apply it quickly. He also learned to lead by example and hold himself accountable. He earned a certificate in coachability and emotional intelligence by learning from real-life CEOs. He plans to carry values of humility, self-awareness, and empathy with him after graduation. For underclassmen, he advised maintaining a healthy balance and making the most of college.
