Andoni Iraola has handed a first Premier League start to 19-year-old Trey Nyoni for Sunday's match against Arsenal at Anfield. The selection places the young midfielder ahead of Ryan Gravenberch in the starting lineup, a decision that has drawn immediate reaction from former players and pundits.

Nyoni has made 20 appearances for Liverpool so far, with 14 coming this season. He has also secured a starting role in the Champions League. By choosing him for this high-profile fixture, Iraola is signaling strong confidence in the teenager's abilities.

Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports that being passed over for a younger player can be a difficult moment for a senior athlete. He recalled his own experience with manager Roy Evans and noted that it is often hard for an established player to regain their position. Carragher described the move as a 'mighty blow' for Gravenberch, suggesting the Dutchman may struggle to recover his place in the team.

Ian Wright, a former Arsenal striker, offered a different perspective. Wright believes the selection proves that Iraola was impressed by Nyoni's performance in training. He stated that it is not just about match games, but about the daily work. Wright called it 'brilliant' that a manager would trust a 19-year-old with such a significant opportunity in a big game.

Iraola explained his reasoning to Sky Sports, saying the decision was about Nyoni rather than himself. The manager said the midfielder has shown the required level, working well both with and without the ball. He noted that Nyoni covers a lot of space, is aggressive in defense, and remains calm in possession. Iraola stated that the coaching staff trusts the player 100 percent.

Teammate Milos Kerkez also commented on Nyoni's qualities, describing him as a hard worker who shows quality on the pitch. Kerkez said the squad will help the young player feel comfortable during the match. Gravenberch and Nyoni started together against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, a game that ended in a 1-1 draw before Liverpool won on penalties.

For Sunday's game, Alexis Mac Allister has returned to the starting lineup. He will partner with Nyoni behind Florian Wirtz in Liverpool's midfield.
