Skidmore, Owings and Merrill released renderings yesterday for a new Chicago Bears stadium in the Armour Square neighborhood. The firm posted the designs to its Instagram account, describing the project as a mixed-use district. The plan combines the stadium with housing, entertainment venues, hotels, parks, and public recreation areas.

The site is located adjacent to the Bridgeport neighborhood. It already has access to the CTA, Metra, and the Dan Ryan Expressway. The land is owned by the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. This ownership structure could allow the team to avoid paying property taxes, a key financial advantage for the developers.

The project is scheduled to move the Wentworth Gardens housing development. This is a Chicago Housing Authority complex located nearby. The firm noted that the area already has the necessary transportation infrastructure in place. There is also potential for federal transportation funds to support the build.

The announcement comes amid a shift in Chicago sports development. In September, Canal Edge LLC released plans for a mixed-use development called the Railyards. That project is owned by Justin Ishbia, a minority owner of the Chicago White Sox. The Railyards plan would move the White Sox to the South Loop. The new baseball stadium would sit along the Chicago River on a site from Roosevelt Road to 18th Street.

The Bears proposal follows a similar pattern of combining sports facilities with residential and commercial space. The firm emphasized the integration of the stadium into the surrounding community. The renderings show open spaces and pedestrian pathways connecting the different parts of the development.

Local officials have not yet responded to the specific design details. The Illinois Sports Facilities Authority has not released a formal timeline for construction. The project requires approval from multiple city and state boards.

The area has a history of major redevelopment. The presence of the housing project means the plan will require relocation strategies for residents. The firm did not specify when the move would begin or how many families are currently in the development.

The new stadium would be the second major sports facility to move to the South Side in recent planning cycles. The previous proposal for the White Sox also targeted a riverfront location. Both projects aim to use existing transit lines to reduce the need for new road construction.

The renderings are now public. The firm invited community feedback through its social media channels. No public meeting is scheduled for the next two weeks.

The Bears currently play at Soldier Field in the Near South Side. The move to Armour Square would place the team closer to the Dan Ryan Expressway and the 61st Street Metra station. The new site is approximately one mile south of the current stadium location.
