Jarosław Kaczyński suggested on Wednesday that a coalition of nationalist-led governments could initiate formal negotiations to leave the European Union. The opposition leader proposed the move not as an immediate departure, but as a strategic lever to compel Brussels to return powers to member states. He presented the idea at an economic forum in southern Poland, marking a sharp escalation in rhetoric ahead of the national vote scheduled for one year from now.

Kaczyński, who leads the Law and Justice party, argued that current EU institutions hold excessive influence over national affairs. He noted that upcoming elections in France and Spain, which may bring far-right politicians to power, could create a window for these talks. He outlined specific reforms, including mechanisms for national parliaments to monitor how often EU bodies violate their own rules. As a final resort, he described a scenario where countries sign a new treaty with a future effective date while simultaneously opening withdrawal talks to maximize pressure on EU institutions.

The comments triggered immediate pushback from the current government. Prime Minister Donald Tusk took to the social platform X to state that Kaczyński had effectively announced Poland should begin negotiations on the conditions for exiting the EU. Kaczyński responded that Tusk was distorting his intentions, writing on the same platform that the goal was to ensure the union benefits common citizens rather than elites. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski weighed in, telling voters that Kaczyński’s honesty would help them understand the consequences of electing the far right.

The Law and Justice party governed Poland from 2015 to 2023, a period defined by frequent clashes with EU institutions over rule of law and human rights standards. Polls released this week indicate that Kaczyński could return his party to power if he forms an alliance with smaller far-right groups. This potential shift matters because Poland serves as a key NATO eastern flank state and one of the EU’s fastest-growing economies, roles that have grown in strategic importance due to its support for Ukraine.

Kaczyński detailed the specific policies his proposed reform would target. He listed improving living conditions, lowering energy prices, and strengthening security as primary goals. He also cited the need for a responsible migration policy and an ambitious economic and agricultural strategy that avoids unnecessary bureaucracy. These points form the core of his argument that the current EU structure hinders national progress.
